Barnsbury Youth Forum

Work Experience

Keep it moving

This Hackney based project aims to get 60 disengaged young people between the ages of 16 and 18 into education, employment or training.

Newlon Fusion is responsible for identifying, recruiting and supporting young people in the Clapton Park area. We also provide specialised dramatherapy based personal development across the borough, though this project, and employability skills courses.

Barnsbury Youth Forum

The aim of this project is to improve and develop new youth provision on the Barnsbury Estate. The programme was developed in consultation with young people on the Barnsbury Estate and has been up and running since October 2007. The Youth Forum aims to facilitate services that would otherwise be unavailable to the wider community, focusing specifically on support and activities for young people of all ages. The programme has been developed in partnership with The Peel Institute and BECA (Barnsbury Estate Community Association). So far there has been a huge uptake from local residents and as a result, a further evening has been set up. It is open to all the children from the estate and is open every Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 7pm. It is run and organised by qualified youth workers and is free to attend.

Activities include;

  • Music workshops, film and video workshops, dance workshops.

  • Trips to the cinema, bowling, ice-skating etc.

  • Visiting similar local youth groups, youth parliament nights, awareness building events etc.

  • Focusing on team building events and activities.

In partnership with the Peel Institute, the model is planned to be replicated on other estates in the area, with the Priory Green Estate scheduled for a similar initiative in November.

Work experience opportunities for young people

Newlon Fusion is happy to offer two weeks work experience placements for year 10 students. So far we have had four students from Islington and two from Hackney Schools and we will be welcoming more students this year. Two students wil be joining us from Islington Arts and Media School from 22nd Feb to 5th March and two more students will be coming from Hackney schools in June.

We would like to offer placements to our young Newlon residents so if you know someone who is in year 10, lives in Hackney or Islington and who would be interested in finding out more about working in Community Regeneration and Social Housing, please tell them to let their schools know about this opportunity.

Here is what two of our previous work experience students said about their placements:

"I had two great weeks, I thought it was amazing. The things I liked were the staff – they were very helpful. I really enjoyed it, there isn’t a bad thing I can say about the work experience."
Fikri Bala

"The three things I enjoyed most about the work experience were the off-site trips to the properties, the meetings and the tour of Emirates Stadium. Thank you for the experience, I had a great time."
Richard Soi

If you would like to know more about this opportunity, please get in touch with Yeliz Akpinar by calling 020 7033 4605 or emailing yakpinar@newlonfusion.org.uk.
